The American Red Cross again will sponsor a national Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign to receive and distribute holiday cards to service members, veterans and their families in the United States and abroad.

The card campaign includes those working and receiving care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc., will partner for the third year to provide screening of all mail sent to the following P.O. Box address:

Holiday Mail for Heroes

P.O. Box 5456

Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

Cards should be postmarked no later than Dec. 7 to reach servicemembers recovering at Walter Reed.

People shouldnt send cards to Walter Reed unless they are addressed to a specific wounded warrior.

Due to security restrictions, Walter Reed cannot accept generic mail addressed to A Recovering Soldier or Any Soldier. In past years, hundreds of cards were returned to senders because of generic addresses, many sent in response to misleading e-mails.

I've got to share this toy with all of you. My husband went to school with the guys and gals who designed it and they actually tested it out on my aggressive chewer/destroyer Calli. This toy ROCKS!! It is the first toy that we have purchased that our dogs cannot destroy. Calli is an aggressive chewer and can de-squeak, shred, destroy, all toys and believe me we have tried them all. Projected images and type

We have all seen some pets that look like their owners and no doubt there will always be a projection of our inner-selves, which leads to this familiar anomaly when choosing a breed. But I mention this, because there is an offshoot to this occurance that has impacted on Mastiffs and Mastiff type in particular.

The bull types ( i.e. Havengore, Withybush, etc.) were not favored by the more aristocratic egos for a number of reasons. Despite the obvious reason of alleged impurity in bull types, there was a more subtle reason. The bull look evoked a feeling of lower class working brutes, in that the pushed in face and intimidating head piece did not display the refinement of those to the manor born!

This projection, gave rise to the Hellingly look, a look that had dignity and sophistication. The longer muzzle and the taller frame was favored over the shorter pugnacious form. This is evidenced in the Van Dyke painting of the Boarhound/Mastiff
and in some of the Hellingly Mastiffs
The bull look had utilitarian advantages
but they were not favored by all of the upper classes, who projected their
own images of proper self onto their Mastiffs and in turn created a class split among fanciers as to what represented correct form for a true Mastiff. The Lyme Hall images did not help those who favored the bull types, as they were also longer in muzzle than their bull competitors and proponents of these refined types used that Lyme purity as a marker to validate their erroneous position.

Tucson!

I just wanted to say a big, big thank you to all of the Arizona crew as well as to congratulate everyone on their wins from this last weekend at the Tucson shows!

What a fantastic experience! Really nice Mastiffs, with Really nice owners! What a treat this entire show was!

I am hoping that everyone who took pictures will put them up! I know Kevin took quite a few HINT!

I will definitely return to this show next year, and remember to bring a kite! Wow, those winds were something, especially Monday! I saw that Kevin had taken a few pictures (one with Lisa and her boy) where you can see people's setups blowing away lol!

Congratulations to all, and thank you so much for making this such a wonderful experience!

Marvin's Very Own Brag!

Marvin got to go on a pretty big road trip this last week! We were gone to AZ to the Tucson shows, wow! What a great experience, great people, beautiful dogs, did I mention great Mastiff people?

Day one of the show Marvin earned his first leg towards his rally title!!! I am sooooooooooooooooo proud of this! We had little to no practice, and my goon boy sailed right through! The only bummer was that I only entered him in rally one day beacause I wanted to see if he would even like it!

I could see the lightbulb going off on Sunday while we were in the conformation ring lol, I could tell that he suddenly recognized what everyone wanted from him. So, on Monday, he performed like a pro (well, almost lol) and we went home with a four point major! He is a MAJOR ham and LOVES any attention, so I expect him to love strutting his stuff around the ring.

We waited to take pictures, and had to take them several times, and finally the photographer decided it would be easier to photoshop the tongue out of the picture ROFL!

In true Marvin style, he snored the entire way home, while Jaimie and I were wishing we had military issue gas masks!

Visitors last week

So we live in a rural area. We are on 2 acres and there is a Christmas tree farm across the road from our place. It's generally very quiet. We are in the midst of rutting season here, and last week had a couple of visitors. They are both enjoying some stored apples from our tree.

dog foods and emergencies

So I was having a discussion with a friend the other day about how much dog food we keep on hand. I am a constant worry wart! So I can't NOT have food at home. I always worry about what happens if....there is an earthquake, or you have to get out for whatever reason, or you get snowed in (that happened last year).
I like to know that I have an adequate supply of dog and cat food on hand.
A friend of mine who has a farm, also has 3 mastiff's, so we order our food together and order enough for 4 to 5 months at a time. When I get down to about my last 3 bags, I put in another order.
Is anyone else as paranoid?
I remember how scared I was when the dog food scare happened, and thinking "now what do I buy?" I used to buy another bag of food as soon as I opened a bag. This went for both the cats and the dogs, but I just put in an order for 12 bags of food, and I hope that will last us till march!
Last year we had so much snow that it took them a week to finally plow our road.
We didn't have a 4 x 4 as it never snows that much here!
I had to give my friend 3 doors down some cat food as she ran out.

Is this something most people think about??? OR is it just me? LOL!
